I know many people don't understand or respect rodents in general. They consider them pests and are something to be squashed like a fly or spider. Some, but not all, are suprised and shocked to learn that rats have the same range of emotion and intelligence as cats and dogs. Many are offended when I ask: "How do you feel about feeding a puppy or kitten to a big snake? Then why do you do it to a rat?"
In reality rats make wonderful cuddly clean affectionate pets for people with not enough time to walk a dog and not enough space for a cat.
So here's what I see as the positive points of rats:
They can learn their name
They can learn to come when called
They can be litter box trained
They are small enough to travel in a pocket
They don't cost a lot to feed
They are cute, even if their type of cute is an aquired taste
They will groom their person like another rat
They are curious
Each rat has a distinctive personality
They are entertaining with their constant antics
They bring a smile to my face with their constant up beat attitudes, or rattitudes
They have wonderful balance
They smell great
They draw me into looking at the world with a new perspective
They give back what they recieve, and so much more
So these are just some of the pluses I see in rats as pets - How about you?
